Eclipse Retro or Backward?

EW writer Owen Gleiberman reviewed 'Eclipse' for the magazine recently, read his review here, and received a bucket load of opinion both over his review and from people arguing about what the 'Twilight' series stands for. He has written a great editorial on how the movie polarizes opinions, the issues of feminism it raises and whether the phenomenon is simply be laughed at by young men because they feel threatened by the 'pop cultural juggernaut'

"Lots of things in life, including movies, are love-it-or-hate-it. But when you listen to the two clashing camps of opinion trying to shout each other down over the Twilight books and movies — let’s call them Team Rapture and Team I Can’t Stand This Garbage — you really get the feeling that its members are standing not just on opposite shores but in opposite worlds, on distant planets in enemy solar systems. You get the feeling that they’ve had, and are talking about, two entirely distinct, utterly non-overlapping experiences. It’s no wonder that the twain shall never meet, or even pretend to be civil.
To recap: Either you’re a hater or you’re a Twihard. Either you identify with Bella Swan as a fresh and noble ordinary girl who has a small touch of the extraordinary about her — a lovely wallflower who blooms under the gaze of her courtly vampire beau — or you think that she’s a drippy, passive doormat in thrall to the kind of male-centric romanticism that should have died out around the time of Gone With the Wind. Either you think that the stories are tepid, meandering, and wishy-washy repetitive, or you think that they coast along on wistful currents of yearning, loneliness, and desire. Then, of course, there’s the Great Edward Debate, which got played out here last year in the fury of responses to my New Moon post. Is he a swooningly idealized James Dean/Heathcliff/Brad Pitt figure, an amorous obsessive with just the right touch of otherworldly danger? Or is he a blood-guzzling “stalker,” an erotic harasser who will break into your house and stare at you while you’re asleep because he’s the kind of guy whom any sane girl would avoid at all costs?"

Twilight stars surprise fans at the movies!

'Eclipse' cast members all made appearances in support of the movie at theaters all over the country over the long weekend.  Peter Facinelli even made an appearance in Hawaii where he was on vacation with his family!

The most exciting appearance of the weekend came at the very end last night when Rob and Kristen appeared together to surprise a theater full of movie goers in Los Angeles. Rob has been very busy shooting 'Water for Elephants' so for him and Kristen (who only has a short amount of time off before pre production of 'On The Road' begins)  to appear was very generous of them. Check out the video below of Rob and Kristen's appearance and click HERE to see pictures of the other cast members surprising fans on the Twilight Facebook page!

David Slade says "Thank You"

@Twilight tweeted a new message from David Slade this afternoon expressing his thanks to the fans for their support.
When you put your heart and soul into something as intense as the duration of a film production, you become completely lost in it. You focus on doing your very best to get it right each day and you work on this for so long that you assume an ownership of it.

When shooting The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, I always felt an awareness of how many people this film would reach and as a result, knew that this film did not just belong to myself, the producers and the studio, but more so, to all of you, the fans of The Twilight Saga.

At the end of the day, after all the hard work is done, all that's left is the film itself, and your overwhelmingly positive and supportive responses have made me feel like we must have done something right. As a filmmaker, this is a rare and strange feeling of connection with an audience of which I will never forget and I thank you all for it.

DAVID SLADE
JULY 2010
Like I said in my review, I think we need to be sending thank you notes to David Slade! He sent us a wonderful love letter, then topped that by giving us a film that we all can take pride in. I may have had initial reservations about him as the director of Eclipse, but I am now one of his biggest fans! I think I speak for most of us when I say, Mr. Slade, you are so very welcome!

'Eclipse' on course for monster weekend Box Office

According to Gossip Cop 'Eclipse' has taken in $261m so far worldwide, breaking the quarter of a billion barrier in it's first five days of release!

"The latest numbers are in, and Eclipse will rake in an estimated $89 million for the holiday weekend.
So far the film has made $161 million in North America and is expected to earn $181 million by the end of the holiday weekend.
Internationally, since opening in June 30, Eclipse has grossed an estimated $100.2 million from 42 territories."

Metro.co.uk says that "The distributor also published a prediction which suggested the film would enjoy total ticket sales worth almost $200 million in its opening six days.
Should that prove to be the case, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse would beat the opening-week box office figures of its two predecessors.
It would also make it third in the all-time opening six-day figures chart, behind The Dark Knight and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."

Note that the distributor predictions are always a little lower than actuals and the movie does not open in the UK for another five days (July 9th).

Congratulations to all the people who made 'Eclipse' such a success, have you seen the movie? What did you think? Check out Amber and Rashell's 'Eclipse' reviews as well!

Focus on the Quileute tribe

Chaske Spencer, Alex Meraz and Julia Jones recently spoke about how the Quileute tribe were portrayed in the Twilight movies;

"Actor Chaske Spencer sees the “Twilight Saga” as a turning point for American Indians working in Hollywood.

Spencer and co-stars Alex Meraz and Julia Jones play Quileute tribal werewolves who can phase between human and wolf form at will. Despite the supernatural context, the actors see the Quileute portrayal as a well-deserved modernization of American Indian imagery.'

Peter hopes fans can 'change the world'

Peter has spoken to Popeater about how 'Twilight' fans can change the world by banding together to support causes like research into childhood cancers, he also spoke about his 4th of July holiday plans;

Peter Facinelli stars in one of the biggest film franchises, but he's taking his time to fight pediatric cancer.

The actor, who plays vampire patriarch Carlisle Cullen in the 'Twilight' films, is raising awareness with Cookies for Cancer to fund research for the disease. As part of the effort, Glad products has teamed up with Cookies and the actor.

Facinelli talks to PopEater about his role in the initiative, and how he wants fans to help.

"When you put all these ['Twilight'] fans together [for the films], it's a very powerful thing. I think if we can spin that towards other areas like pediatric cancer and bring that kind of camaraderie toward a specific event or group or cause, I think we can help change the world."

The 'Nurse Jackie' star also tells us about the bake sale competition he will compete in for the cause, and what his plans for the Fourth of July are.
Tell me a little about your work with Glad to Give and Cookies for Cancer?

I'm excited to be working with Glad products because they are teaming up with Cookies for Cancer, a non-profit organization. We're trying to support research for new and improved therapies for pediatric cancer through doing these bake sales. How I got involved is, I do a lot of charity work for pediatric cancer through Alex's Lemonade foundation. They came to me and asked me if I'd want to be a part of raising awareness for this as well. They are essentially doing the same thing. Pediatric cancer is the leading cause of death by disease of children under the age of 18. But half of the drugs used to treat children with cancer are 20 years old. They have new research technologies, but they don't have the money for it. What we're trying to do is just help raise awareness, help fund this research, so we can stamp out cancer in children.

How can anyone get involved?
It's a big campaign that extends all the way through the holiday. Right now, when you buy specially marked Glad products, you can enter a code online and Glad will donate a dollar to Cookies for Cancer, up to $100K. If they want to find out more information, they can go to Glad.com and learn all about the promotion and host their own bake sale. What we're going to be doing in November, there are three celebrities -- myself, Joan Cusack and Jayma Mays -- and we're going to do a celebrity bake-off competition. They are going to stream these bake sales live and the fans can donate money towards Cookies for Cancer. But also, we're going to be selling these cookies live in these bakeries, so the celebrity who comes up with the most money wins the competition.

What are you going to bake?
I have no idea yet. I'm for sure going to be going to my wife, Jennie [Garth], because she is the baker in the family. I'm going to be hitting her up for some recipes.

Do you think I'll win?

Whatever I compete against, I always try to win. I don't know if you ever saw the bet I did with my friend Rob. [Editor's Note: Facinelli bet Rob DeFranco that he could get 1 million Twitter followers. Upon Facinelli's win, Rob had to dance around in a bikini on Hollywood Boulevard, singing 'Single Ladies.']

Yes, I did.

Yeah, I don't like to lose. Even if it's something like baking, I'm going 100 percent.

What sweets are your favorite?
I like chocolate chip cookies, sometimes too much.

On a more serious note, do you feel lucky that you can use your celebrity to bring attention to causes like these?
Here's how I feel -- I don't think you need celebrity status to get things done or be a part of something. One person, to me, as clichéd as it sounds, can make a difference. If you look at the people who founded this company, Cookies for Cancer, they were parents who were inspired by their young son's ongoing fight against cancer. If you look at the people who founded Alex's Lemonade, they were just parents, who again, were inspired by their daughter's disease. These people weren't celebrities, they started these programs to make a difference. But it definitely takes a village. It does. For me, being able to use my name in order to spread that awareness and spearhead this village in the right direction ... because I feel like people want to help, they just don't know how. They want to be able to say, "Listen, I'd love to be a part of stamping out cancer, what can I do?" For me to be able to use my name to get their attention, to say "this is what we can do," just as simple as buying some cookies, I'm ecstatic to be able to do that. At this point, because of what I'm doing, because of 'Nurse Jackie,' because of 'Twilight,' people might look at what I'm doing and so my name might get some attention, so I can bring awareness to a cause or project. That to me is important, in order to be able to give back.

Eclipse according to Amber

While life has been in high level crazy mode for me lately, I was able to see Eclipse at midnight as planned. Little Man was safe at home with his daddy, his temperature under control and having had every test run they could think of during the previous 24 hours. I found a few spare moments during the week to make some notes and finally got it all written up for my page at The Collective Review yesterday. For those who are not familiar, I started writing for them a year ago when they were The Fifth Medium or t5m. It's a wonderful site based out of London and you should really check it out. It's one of my little home away from homes.
Here is an excerpt...
As Robert Pattinson said when he was on the ‘Tonight Show with Jay Leno’, the movie is based on a book so they aren’t really any secrets. Having said that, I avoided all the clips and stills before seeing the movie and I’m glad that I did. I promise not to share anything with you here that will spoil your viewing experience. These are just some of my thoughts on the movie and I can’t wait to hear yours!
Overall, I was very happy with Eclipse. The love letter that David Slade wrote to the fans deserves an equally loving response. He did a fantastic job in bringing more of the action of Eclipse to life without losing the romance that is the backbone of the saga. If you’ve read The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: an Eclipse novella, you will certainly see its influence on the film. I was really glad to see how small details were worked into the script. If you haven’t read it yet, be sure to check out breetanner.com where you can read the book for free until July 5 at midnight EST. You can also check out the review I wrote of the book here.
You can read the rest here and be sure to leave me some comments over there! I can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts!

My 3 Eclipse Cents (non-spoilery)

This time, I tried really hard to block out the incoming avalanche of pictures, early reviews, tv-spots, full-blown trailers (except for highly anticipated first one, of course), etc, etc. I was a good little Eclipse virgin when I finally entered that movie theater late on Friday (yeah, yeah, I know, I'm not a twihard enough for the midnight showings in the middle of the week). I had no expectations (well, maybe I expected to see some very bad wigs... again...). All I had was tingly anticipation and excitement, ready to be immersed into the favorite story. So, here's what I have to say about it, hopefully without revealing major story twists (in case that there's still somebody in the universe who has no clue how it's gonna end ;)) Disclaimer: Eclipse is my least favorite book of the 4.
* My googly-eyes internal fan girl was satisfied. After long incursions into the strange world of fanfiction and observing the beloved actors in non-twilight roles, it was very-very nice to see them back in their "natural habitat", totally "canon", in all their gold-eyed glory.
* My sarcastic movie-critic self had a field day. OMG, they still can't get the wigs, clothes and makeup right... What is it with you, big shot Hollywood stylist people? It's not even funny anymore...
* After hearing tons of criticism of "amateurish" special effects and CGI, I was pleasantly surprised with some very effective visuals. The beginning of the film was out right scary (although more in the classical "scary movie" style, the kind that makes you jump in your seat from unexpected appearances and hints to the lurking evil). The battle scene was quite impressive, despite being relatively short with all "battling" consisting for the most part of fast running. The wolves look great, imho, in their animal form.
* Reading Bree's story before the movie was quite helpful in understanding Volturi dialogue and in feeling more sorry for the girl herself.
* If in NM I was perplexed and a little dizzy with all the camera circling around the actors, this one had a TON of closeups. I mean, seriously, the main character's faces in gigantic proportions were plastered on the screen for like 60% of the time, I swear. I am now painfully familiar with every pimple on young Jacob's forehead, every hair in Edward's sideburns and every single freckle on Bella's nose. Btw, am I going crazy, or did anybody else notice that Jacob's face was kinda blurred out during and before the "big kiss" scene? The same way they do with the aging TV personalities when they do those tearjerking one-on-one interviews, and want minimize the appearance of wrinkles on your screens? I thought it was really weird.
* What else? Overall, I have to say, Twilight is the most naive yet true to the whole "teen movie" idea, New Moon is the most emotional and strangely... romantic of the three, and Eclipse, I suppose is the most fast-paced and action-packed, in my book. I did not get the butterflies in my stomach, even during the "don't try to take your clothes off" moment and even the happy Edward right after the proposal didn't do it for me :(
* I'm sorry to say, but I still miss Rachelle. No offense to Bryce, who, I'm sure is a fine actress and all, but after the "original" fiery Victoria, hers seemed sort of fake and flat...
* Riley was cool though. I wish his head didn't have to roll at the end... Ooops, I think I should stop writing until I reveal too much secret information (it's the super Russian spy in me speaking, in case you didn't notice).
Sooo, share your most adored and least favorite moments in the Eclipse. What impressed you the most and what disappointed? Since the comments go under the "jump", those who wish to remain "pure" before watching the movie for themselves can safely move on to the next post.

EW Interviews Melissa Rosenberg

EW interviewed screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg about 'Eclipse'. She talked about working with different directors, her favorite moments in the movie and about the series Religious undertones.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did writing Eclipse compare to the last two books?
MELISSA ROSENBERG:
For me, Eclipse was my favorite book of the first three, for sure. The triangle comes to a head and that creates some really tense conflict, which is always good when you’re trying to write scenes. This is the third act of the story because Breaking Dawn goes off into completely new territory. That, and the huge battle we build to throughout the movie, was compelling. What was funny was Eclipse ended up being the hardest to write. That big battle happens in the third act, so it was all about pulling some of the conflict and danger forward to lace throughout the story. It became quite the challenge. But in the end, it was quite fun because I got to fill out some of the mythology, such as the character of Riley, the newborn army, Victoria, and everything that was going on that you can’t do in the book because it’s from Bella’s point-of-view.

Making Of 'Eclipse' film maker and special effects BTS videos

'Making of' has posted their interviews with the film makers and special effects teams behind 'Eclipse'. As a bonus we also get a glimpse of Taylor in the gray spandex suit he has talked so much about for filming a Bella/Jacob Wolf scene!

Interview with Phil Tippett & Taylor in the Spandex suit!

'Eclipse' breaks box office records

'Eclipse' is breaking multiple box office records in it's first days of release! The Los Angeles Times reports that 'Eclipse' will make $180m by Monday;

“Last November’s “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” grossed $179 million in the U.S. and Canada by its sixth day and “Eclipse” will likely do at least that much by Monday and possibly as much as $200 million, said people who have seen pre-release surveys. The new film has an advantage over its predecessor given the holiday weekend, the fact that many students are off from school and can go to weekday matinees, and that it is the first “Twilight” movie to play on premium priced Imax screens.
As a result, total receipts for the new film will almost certainly be very front-loaded, with most of its revenue coming in the first week.
“It’s a compressed period during which we expect to do a whole bunch of business,” said Summit domestic distribution president Richard Fay.
It remains to be seen, however, whether “Eclipse” will significantly outperform the $297-million total gross of “New Moon,” or if it will simply be the same “Twilight” fans turning out once again.”

Box office Mojo is also reporting;
"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse drained more of its opening day demand with its midnight opening than The Twilight Saga: New Moon did. Despite setting the midnight record with over $30 million, Eclipse's full day came in at an estimated $68.5 million, falling short of New Moon's $72.7 million record ($26.3 million of which from its midnight launch).
Playing on approximately 8,000 screens at an opening-record 4,416 locations, Eclipse still had a phenomenal debut, setting two other records. The vampire romance sequel boasted the largest Wednesday gross of all time, surpassing Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's $62 million. It also logged the top-grossing summer day ever, surpassing The Dark Knight's $67.2 million.
Overall, Eclipse posted the second highest-grossing single day of all time, behind only its predecessor."
