An Update on Amber at the Atlanta Twi-Tour

Yesterday was an exciting day with many video presentations and the lovely people at the Lexicon. Peter Facinelli was also in attendance and Amber had a chance to gets some autographs and pictures.

Before the first Twilight movie in 2008, I was a much more open person. Now I spend a lot of time looking at the floor in public in an attempt not to get noticed. It can get a little boring. But whatever sacrifices I’ve had to make as a rising star, my job makes up for it a hundredfold.I won the Orange Rising Star Award at the Baftas last week. As I stood on stage at the Royal Opera House, I felt overwhelmed – in front of all these industry people, whom I don’t just admire, but who are the foundation of what I want to do. It’s hard to explain how it feels being in the same room as Kate Winslet.  Perhaps it’s similar to how a Twilight fan feels on seeing me in person.

Eclipse Book Discussion - Chapter 12: Time

This post will contain book spoilers through Chapter 12 of Eclipse. Go Read.

Time. It is probably the most precious commodity. It's something we never seem to have enough of. It can define our entire lives. And a very appropriate title for this chapter.

We begin with a silly moment from Alice, ominously announcing her vision of a graduation party for Bella.The moment is humorous. Bella's reluctance to parties. Alice's cryptic gratitude for her graduation present. And a favorite line of mine, from Edward:

"Amazing," Edward muttered. "How can someone so tiny be so annoying."

Alice laughed. "It's a talent."

Why do I picture the chick from the Progressive insurance commercials there?

Anyway, the point of this discussion is that the reality of her impending change finally hits Bella. While I don't doubt her desire to be changed in this moment, her focus finally shifts for a moment. No longer is she just thinking about forever with Edward, but forever without Charlie, Renee, or Jacob.

Sabrina: Not to mention that she's worried about Edward's condition
Amber: I don't think she's focusing so much on that at the moment.  It's the reality of what the change means, she reminds him that Carlisle promised he'd change her after graduation.

The conversation that evolves between Bella and Edward here is truly one of my favorite moments in the entire series. More, even, than the leg hitch, so you know I mean business. We start to see into Edward's mind even more. First, is his insistence on putting off her change. Finally, we see through him a bit, because the argument is not about her soul, or being a monster. He simply wants her to have a choice. Something none of the rest of the Cullens had. Bella has the opportunity to fully choose her future, and he wants her to make that choice for the right reasons. And fear is a poor reason.

They continue to open up. "You don't want me to become a vampire." says Bella. And we hear the truth from Edward. "I want it more than anything, for myself." His fears of endangering her life and her sould are compounded by the utter selfishness he feels for wanting to change her. To take away that which he treasures, what he wishes he could have had. A human life.

Amber: but it's all just "if only's" because of Carlisle's choices.  That's not the life that Edward would have had. That's his life had the Spanish Influenza not taken him; that option was taken away before Carlisle met him.
I wonder if that's something Edward had ever considered? How much, though, are we consumed by what we don't have, or what 'might have been'?

Edward follows up Bella's concern with his own: "You don't want to be my wife."
 
Bella explains her concerns, and shows  her age a bit. A teenager is still looking for their role in the world. haven't seen where the specific stereotypes blend into unique stories.

Sabrina: And she really doesn't want to disappoint Renee.
Amber: although...the girl is dating a vampire, shouldn't she be used to breaking stereotype by now?
Kerry: no...because she doesn't see it that way
Amber: I know..I'm just pointing out the irony here

And here comes my favorite passage, and yes, I'm going to quote it in full.

"You see, Bella, I was that boy. In my world,I was already a man. I wasn't looking for love -- no, i was far too eager to be a soldier for that; I thought of nothing but the idealized glory of the war that they were selling prospective draftees then -- but if I had found..." He paused, cocking his head to the side. "I was going to say if I had found someone, but that won't do. If I had found you, there isn't a doubt in my mind how I would have proceeded. I was that boy, who would have -- as soon as I discovered that you were what I was looking for -- gotten down on one knee and endeavored to secure your hand. I would have wanted  you for eternity, even when the word didn't have quite the same connotations."

You know when he told Bella to "breathe", afterwards? Yeah, me too.

Sometimes, I wonder if Bella's opposition isn't just more about being right, than being true...

Then, of course, we're thrust out of this incredibly romantic moment to deal with reality. A new story prints in the paper about the attacks in Seattle, and it becomes obvious that whatever vampire is wrecking havoc in the city is getting a lot worse. Edward and Bella skip school that day to consult with Jasper.

Until this point, along with Bella, we don't know much about Jasper. We know he struggles with control more than the others. Bella experienced that first-hand. He shies away from Bella for that exact reason. Edward is well-studied, so we only think of Carlisle as another source of information. But this situation, newborn vampires, is Jasper's area of expertise, we learn.

The chapter closes with Jasper revealing, literally, his story, as we are shown the hundred of scars that cover his body.

Remember Me Saturday

You may have noticed the new button on our sidebar about Remember Me Saturday. This is a wonderful fan-powered movement to support all the stars of this film and push it to number one at the box office. Of course, you can read more info at the site, but I just wanted to be sure I had encouraged you all to take everyone you know to see Remember Me on Saturday, March 13.

The reviewers of this film have been absolutely enthralled with Rob's performance. This is the role that can break him out of the Twilight and Edward mold. As fans, it gives us the chance to break out of the "we love Rob because we think he's Edward" stereotype. I am SO excited to see this movie! So let's all show our support of this wonderful actor and the rest of this cast and go see Remember Me, March 12 and March 13.

Eclipse Book Discussion - Chapter 11 - Legends

This winter has been rough on us here at Eyes of Amber. There has been sickness and real life issues abounding. More than one ER visit has kept us from getting together to work on the discussion the way we would like to. The good news is that everyone is on the mend and we will be bringing you the discussion of chapter 12 on Thursday with Kerry, Sabrina and myself.

To get us caught up, here is the chapter 11 summary from Twilight Lexicon.

Bella accompanies Jacob to a council meeting of the elders of the tribe, where she sees the rest of the pack, who welcome her as a friend. She is surprised to find Sue Clearwater and her two children, Seth and Leah, at the bonfire as well, and surmises that they must now also be in on the secret. After a lighthearted meal, Bella realizes it’s getting late and she needs to go home, but Jacob quickly lets her know the night is for more than fun.

The elders then tell the stories of the pack’s origins and legends that have been passed down for generations. While Emily takes notes, Billy tells the story of how the Quileutes came to be werewolves. They were originally spirit warriors, able to leave their bodies to defend their tribe, but when the last great chief, Taha Aki, merged his spirit with that of a wolf after Utlapa, a traitorous warrior, stole his body, the werewolves were created. They discovered that as long as a warrior chose to continue changing into his wolf form he would not age.

As Billy’s tale ends, Old Quil begins the tale of the third wife’s sacrifice. Taha Aki saw his third wife as his true mate and gave up his wolf form so that he could grow old with her.  After he had grown old, women in the neighboring Makah tribe began to disappear. The Makahs suspected the Quileutes because of their magic, so Taha Aki charged his eldest wolf-son, Taha Wi, to find the culprit. Taha Wi took five other wolves with him to search the mountains, but sent half the pack home when the trail they followed led them too far north. Tahi Wi and his two brothers never returned. Taha Aki went to the chief of the Makahs in mourning, and enmity between the tribes ceased. A year later, the disappearances started again. The wolves agreed to help the Makahs, and this time they found a male cold one feeding from a maiden. Only one wolf survived the attack, Yaha Uta, the oldest son of Taha Aki’s third wife. The cold one was hard as stone, fast, and deadly, and Yaha Uta lost his two brothers in the fight. He brought the Cold One’s corpse back to the village for the elders to see. The corpse tried to reassemble itself, so they set fire to it and separated the ashes into small bags, one of which Billy still possesses. The Cold One’s mate came to the village seeking revenge and killed the last wolf protector, Yaha Uta, as well as many of the tribe. Taha Aki turned into a wolf again in order to fight her, but he was old and she was too strong. The third wife saw his struggle and stabbed herself in front of the Cold Woman to distract her with her blood. The third wife died, but thanks to her sacrifice, Taha Aki was able to destroy the female. Afterwards, Taha Aki stayed with the body of his wife for one day, as a wolf, then and then ran to the forest and never returned. Over time, the warriors only changed into wolves if Cold Ones came to the area. As long as there were only one or two, the pack stayed small. 

Old Quil tells of the coming of the Cullens and the pact made with Ephraim Black, saying that the number of wolves is greater due to their being more Cold Ones around than ever before. Bella feels an affinity towards the third wife and falls asleep thinking of her. Jacob calls Edward and Charlie for her, both to keep her out of trouble as well as ensure additional time with her as a reward for “playing nice.” Jacob takes Bella to meet Edward, who is pacing while he waits for her. Edward takes Bella home and stays with her.  Bella has a bad dream in which Rosalie is fighting Billy Black in his wolf form and sees the Third Wife’s knife in her own hand. She wakes to find Edward reading Wuthering Heights, a novel he previously claimed to dislike. As he lulls her back to sleep, he tells her that she is awakening human emotions in him, and that he can now relate to Heathcliff as he couldn’t before. The next morning, Bella remembers what Edward said, and finds her book open to Heathcliff’s declaration that he could never hurt Catherine by killing her husband, though he longs to do so. She talks herself into discounting the passage as being indicative of the change in Edward’s feelings.

I hate that we didn't get to discuss this one because it's such a big chapter, but we're working on some live discussions in the very near future so all of our readers can participate too! Keep an eye out for updates.

It's Our 900th Post! What better way to celebrate than Robapalooza?

So, we're taking some time here to be a Rob blog as the Remember Me press frenzy goes on this week. Rob (and Emilie,too!) spent the weekend in interviews. It was very cute to watch the tweets from all the journalists as they fell under the spell Rob has had us under for more than a year now!

Rob has a busy day today. This morning he was at the Today Show. A big group of people from the Letters to Twilight forum was there, though they didn't get to meet Rob. Still 20-feet isn't too shabby! Hopefully, we'll have some  more from them tonight at the red carpet.

For those avoiding spoilers, you may want to skip the Today Show interview. While there isn't a direct spoiler, there are some references to some themes in the movie that may easily give away a piece of the story.

Don't forget to watch (or at least DVR) Jimmy Fallon tonight. I can't WAIT to see what's going to happen there.
